Expert: Japan was wary of amendments to the Constitution of the Russian Federation because of the Kuril Islands
Japanese public opinion has become more wary in connection with the adoption of an amendment to the Constitution of the Russian Federation on the inadmissibility of actions to alienate the territory of Russia, said former professor at Tokyo University Sofia Toshihiko Ueno on July 10. According to him, the negative effect is associated with the expectation of difficulties that may arise when concluding a peace treaty between Russia and Japan, and receiving, as expected in Tokyo, the southern Kuril Islands. They (Japanese ed.) Understand that returning the northern territories will be more difficult than before, RIA Novosti quotes Ueno. According to him, today the Russian authorities should declare that negotiations on the conclusion of a peace treaty are not being conducted to cede territories, but to demarcate the Japanese-Russian border. Recall that the four islands of the Kuril ridge were annexed by the Soviet Union following the results of World War II. Nevertheless, Japan's political elite regularly raises this issue, not agreeing to recognize this fact as accomplished.
