Schroeder spoke about damage to the Nord Stream - 2 from US sanctions
In the case of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline (SP-2) we are no longer talking about the Russian, but about the European project, since about 120 companies were involved in it and investments worth 12 billion were made on July 1, such an opinion was expressed by former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder during a public hearing of the Bundestag Committee on Economics and Energy, which was devoted to the situation around the construction of the gas pipeline. In view of this, according to the ex-chancellor, new US sanctions against SP-2 should be rejected both in our and European interests. Schroeder also pointed out that in order to tear out especially poisonous teeth from the US Congress bill on new sanctions against the gas pipeline SP-2 a parliamentary discussion is needed. It is necessary to use parliamentary discussion (with the American Congress) to tear out especially poisonous teeth from this bill, he said. In addition, according to the former German chancellor, these sanctions are an obstacle to the transatlantic partnership and, therefore, Washington needs to point out that it is not in the interests of security and for the United States to treat Europe in this way. At the same time, Schroeder clarified that this US attempt to intervene in German energy policy and that the argument about threats to Europe's energy security from SP-2 is incorrect. Note, as reported by the news agency, earlier a group of US senators proposed to include additional sanctions on the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline in the draft US defense budget for fiscal year 2020 2021.
